There are a lot of emotions and excitement involved on your wedding day. You may have a question in mind whether you have worn the engagement ring on the correct finger or not. So, on what hand does a wedding ring go on?

As per tradition, the engagement ring is worn on the left hand’s fourth finger. There is a very romantic reason behind this fourth finger. In ancient Romans, it was believed that this finger had a vein that has a direct connection with the heart. Hence, wearing the ring on this lifeline finger is a symbol of love. Well! This fact is not true.

Although, no such vein exists in our body (but we love this story!) yet the tradition of wearing the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand continues in many countries. But there are always exceptions!

Countries like Russia, Colombia, and Greece have the tradition of wearing the ring on the right side. Many Catholic couples believe that the fourth finger has a connection with our hearts. Hence these couples (even living in Russia or Greece) follow the custom of wearing the ring in the left hand.

Wedding ring pattern

It is a tradition to exchange rings at the time of marriage. So on which finger should you wear the ring, it is certainly your choice. Traditions are good, but etiquette rules have given some flexibility.

You can choose any metal for making your ring, you can go with simple bands or can decorate it with beautiful stones and designs. Some couples also go with the wedding date or any other lovely phrase inscribed on their bands.

Is it fine to wear a wedding ring on the right hand?

There is no compulsion to wear the wedding ring on the left hand. While tradition says that you should wear it on the left hand, modern culture allows you to follow your own choice. It is fine to wear the ring in any of your hands and any finger.

Even if you don’t want to wear a ring, that’s completely your choice, decide the things which suit your lifestyle in a better manner.

Promise ring finger

Promise ring shows the love commitment and is followed by the engagement ring.

Some couples don’t want to get involved in marriage but show their commitment through a promise ring. In the current era, promise rings can have multiple meanings; typically reflecting an exclusive relationship. This ring also means that the couple has decided to marry each other someday. Many people consider a promise ring as pre-engagement, but it can’t always be the case.

So, on which finger should you wear the promise ring? Well! There is no rule for this. Some couples prefer to wear it on the same finger as the wedding ring, but as it’s not the official ring you can wear it on any finger. But, if you decide to wear this ring on the left hand, then after marriage you should shift that to your right-hand right finger.

Conclusion

Once again, traditions are followed in many countries but keep in mind that these are not rules. You can buy any wedding ring and can wear it on any of your fingers. Some may choose different fingers for wedding rings and promise rings, or some may not like to wear any ring. Who would have thought that a simple ring can create so much uniqueness?
